Fsu Film School Essay

Set Your Next Scene

Ready to make your mark with an MFA degree in Production? If so, please carefully review the requirements listed below as admission is highly selective—we’re scouting the boldest and brightest storytellers to join us at the FSU Film School.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and must have at least a 3.0 GPA in upper-division coursework (all undergraduate courses completed after reaching 60 credits).

Applicants are not required to have previous experience in film production or film-related coursework. However, strong candidates should be able to demonstrate an active interest in visual and/or narrative storytelling through coursework, internships, creative works, job experience, and/or compelling life experiences, and how that experience will help make them strong filmmakers.

The application will require you to answer the questions under Applicant Information and upload the following additional materials (detailed instructions including prompts can be found within the application):

  1. Resume
  2. Statement of Purpose

During the first five months of your coursework, your attention will be focused on production as you write and direct a short film. You’ll also shoot, design, produce and edit a short film while working as a key second crew member on eight additional films. After a whirlwind experience in production, you’ll travel to London for a semester that takes you beyond classroom walls and expands your worldview. While abroad, you’ll create your first full-length feature and a one-act play.

Back in Tallahassee, your second year will be entirely focused on writing, giving you the opportunity to collaborate with production students on their thesis films if you choose. To prepare you for the industry, you’ll take a class devoted solely to the art of pitching, which culminates in a week-long trip to Los Angeles. The LA intensive will allow you to pitch your work to industry professionals, get valuable feedback and connect with our strong alumni network.

Throughout the program, our writers are challenged to experiment across genres, explore their unique voices, and build a body of work for both television and film. With small classes of six to eight writers, we offer individual attention and hand-tailored approaches to take each writer to the next level.
